Deciduous coastal tree, 12 to 24 meters tall, provides shade in growing season with its large leaves, foliage is high in calcium and conditions soils near bye, fast grower in earley stages of life (first 50 to 80 years, can live >200 years). Prefers rich, moist soils, and thrives along streamsides however can tolerate upland, drier soils. Has deeply furrowed bark that supports epipytes (plants that grow on trees without soil such as deer fern).
